On 3 July 2026, José Miguel Júdice participated in the 19th Congress of the Commercial Arbitration Centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he moderated the panel entitled “The Role and Liability of Arbitral Institutions and Arbitrators.”
The session featured Augusto Tolentino, founding partner of Tolentino Advogados in Belo Horizonte; Carine Dupeyron, partner at Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier in Paris; José Ferreira Gomes, independent arbitrator and associate professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon; and Miguel Azevedo, counsel at Garrigues in Lisbon.
The speakers’ extensive experience and the quality of their contributions enabled an in-depth analysis of the duties and liabilities of arbitral institutions and arbitrators, as well as their role in safeguarding the independence, credibility and efficiency of arbitration. The panel proved particularly insightful and highly valuable from an educational perspective, contributing to the success of the session.
The programme on 3 July brought together specialists from Portugal, Brazil, France, the United Kingdom, Mozambique, Angola and Spain, fostering an international discussion on some of the key challenges currently facing arbitration.
The proceedings began with the panel “The Nigeria v P&ID Case and the Duties of Arbitrators,” moderated by Filipe Vaz Pinto, followed by the session moderated by José Miguel Júdice.
In the afternoon, the Congress continued with the panel “Document Production — Strategic Considerations, Requirements, Models and Practices,” moderated by Carla Gonçalves Borges, and concluded with a session on “Efficiency and Strategy in Arbitration,” moderated by Fernando Aguilar de Carvalho.
The diversity of the topics addressed and the jurisdictions represented enabled a broad exchange of experiences and perspectives on the evolution of international arbitration, the ethical and procedural requirements placed on its participants, and the tools required to ensure more efficient and credible proceedings.
